My Rescue Animals

Maggie is a Yorkie that was rescued from a puppy mill bust somewhere in North East Texas. I don't know any of the details. She had to be shaved down due to her fur being so knotted. 3 1/2lbs of fur was shaved. Her body was full of sores from the hair pulling so tight on the skin. She is in the process of being socialized. She has conquered the potty training. She is learning to trust but it is taking some time. She comes to me and her new daddy but that is about as far as we have gotten. We have only had her about 2 1/2 months so we consider her to be making great progress.

Clifford was rescued when his previous owner was tired of him at 6 months old and was going to take him to a local shelter. She called me and told me about it and I told her I would take him. My mom had loss her Pebbles and I thought he would be a good pet for her. Clifford lived with my mom for 7 years before she passed away last Sept. Clifford came to live with us and is doing well as you can see with the picture of him and Joey playing.

Joey (white chihuahua) was rescued from a puppy mill. Joey did not trust anyone and it took him close to a year to become completely secure. Before being rescued he was in the middle of a 3 tier stack of cages and had never been taken out of that cage. He ate, did his business and was breed in that cage. As you can see he has become a happy and playful little boy.

Miss Lily (chihuahua)was rescued about 6 yrs ago when her previous owners moved and left her chained to a tree with a logging chain in the middle of December.

Chance (rotty)was rescued 8 years ago when his mom was killed by a car and the owners were going to kill all the puppies. The puppies were 3 weeks old when we rescued them. We hand fed them until they were old enough to be adopted out. We found great homes for the other 5 and we kept Chance. He is a big sweetie and his best friends are his cat and his teddy bear.

Tinker Belle

Tinker Belle died Oct. 13, 2009
Tinker Belle was rescued by a friend of mine about 5 years ago from a flea market. This lady was running around waving Tinker in the air screaming, "Does anyone want this dog"? My friend who has many rescue didn't have room for her but refused to leave her with this woman for fear of what type of home Tinker Belle would go to. She called me that afternoon and asked if I would foster her until a suitable home could be found. I told her yes I would take her and we decided we would keep her fearing she had been tramatized enough. After some investigating we found that Tinker Belle's previous home was a back yard breeder who had been shut down several times by authorities due to horrible living conditions the animals were in.
Tinker had several dental problems as well as a heart murmur. We decided to have her spayed and during her surgery the vet found her uterus and bladder we adhered together which was probably causesd by over breeding.
Tinker was not very trusting in the beginning and pretty much stayed in what we called "her hooch". I would lay on the floor for hours in front of her hooch talking to her until one day she came to me. I didn't force the issue but let her come at her own pace. She ended up being a special little girl who gave the sweetest kisses. She loved sitting on her pillow or on your lap for hours on end.
We loss another member of our pack and we miss her terribly. All of my other furkids miss their pack members that we loss in less than a month but I know she has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and is happy and healthy and running with our other fur-Angels.

Glory

Glory Died Sept 21, 2009

This post is going to be a little different from my normal post. However, this is about a cause that is very close to my heart. Many of you already know that I have been involved in animal rescue for several years. Today's post is about Glory, who died today. Glory is one of my rescue babies. She came to us several years ago with a broken heart and a broken spirit after her beloved owner died suddenly. In the month that followed her owners passing Glory had been to 4 other homes before coming to us. All those others who attempted to adopt her could not get her to eat so they kept returning her back to the rescue organization that had taken her in. Each time she was returned she was more and more withdrawn and more depressed. Thats when they called me and asked if I could foster her until a permanent home could be found. We gladly took her in but were appauled at the condition she was in. Not only was she starving herself to death, she had lost all sense of security. She was scared of everything. My husband and I had decided we would adopt her because she had been traumatized enough and we would be her forever home. After 3 weeks of trial and error I finally was able to get her to eat. I think I may have found the way her previous owner fed her because the gladly ate her kibble mixed with a little can food made into a paste. (Over the years that was the ONLY way she would eat.) Slowly she started trusting us and eventually she found the sense of security that she had lost. Her daddy became her favorite thing in the world and he belonged to her. She loved me but she loved him more and that was ok too. I believe she was grateful and that she loved us unconditionally. Her broken heart healed and her free spirit returned. She was always the first one to greet us at the door and was always there to give us that puppy love to comfort us when we needed it. Whenever we would bring in another rescue she would sniff it as if she was letting it know it would be ok. Glory wasn't feeling well yesterday and I was planning on taking her into the vet this morning. My husband got up at 4am for work and she appeared to be doing better. She got up with him, walked around and went out to potty. He put her back to bed at 5am thinking all would be ok. My rotty woke me up at 6:38am with a bone chillin howl and I immediately got up and went to check on Glory. She was dead. Her limp, lifeless body was still warm. I attempted to do CPR but she was gone. Glory was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure almost 2 yrs ago and I guess her heart finally gave out. We lost part of our pack today. All of the other furkids are quiet today. They all went to see her before I took her out and buried her beside the Jasmine bush. Its a beautiful bush that blooms and the Jasmine smells so good and I thought to be a great final resting place for her. Although some say our pack is a bunch of misfits that no one else wants, we love them without condition of breed, age, color or health. Some may say she was "just a dog" but to us she was so much more than "just a dog" as all of our misfits are. Glory became a big part of our family and we are going to miss her. Glory was a sweet girl and we loved her so much! She brought so much joy, love and happiness to our family and my only hope is that we did the same for her. Working in animal rescue I have come across some very special animals. If you are considering a pet please check with your local animal rescue organizations or you local animal shelter. Also consider when you bring a pet home that it needs time to adapt to its new surrounding. It needs time to find that security and that comfort zone. Don't be hasty in your decision whether it be adopting or returning an adopted animal. Remember they are traumatized and need comfort and reassurance from you. In return you will find a best friend who loves you unconditionally and will give you comfort when nothing else will.

Beaudreaux

Beaudreax died Oct. 1, 2009

Beaudreaux was my very first rescue after losing my Lil Bit. Over the past 6 months his health has been going down hill. During the early morning hours of Oct 1st Beaudreaux had a stoke and had to be put to sleep that morning. My heart is broken. Beau was a special little boy who brought so much into my life. Although I have other rescues in my home Beau holds a special place that none can fill. Losing my Beau is like losing my Lil Bit all over again. Beau could have his little attitude but that was one of the things that was so special about him. He loved strutting his stuff when he was groomed but hated going to the groomer. He loved having his neck kissed but refused to give kisses. He didn't like toys much because he thought he was to good for that but loved sitting in your lap for hours and hours. On road trips he thought he was supposed to assist you in the driving and would he would his paws on the wheel like he was the driver. Beau and I were in constant competition to see who was leader of the pact and sometimes I would actually win. We lost a member of our pact that day and I will miss that little nub wagging at me. Beau was part of my shadow. It is a very sad day and will be for some time. Beau is buried beside our Glory girl and our Hope next to the beautiful Jasmine bush.Thank you Sharon for rescuing this special little boy all those years ago. He bought so much love, joy, happiness and yes sometimes frustration into my life and I loved him with all my heart and I wouldn't change a thing.Below is what the rescuer wrote when I adopted Beau from her 7 years ago.

Beaudreaux

Beaudreaux was a 9 year old male poodle who was surrendered by his owner because he "didn't get along with my 10 month old granddaughter." This poor little guy was traumatized by a move into a foster home with larger dogs. He turned out to have chronic allergies, resulting in a painful ear infection. And, it was becoming increasingly clear that at 9, although that is not very old for a poodle, it was going to be difficult to find him a new home. Beaudreaux was so unhappy about losing the only home he had ever known that he started developing behavior problems. And, then, POTL was contacted by an angel, Marilyn Broadaway.Marilyn had just lost her 8 year old poodle to leukemia and she was touched by Beaudreaux's picture and story on our website. Although she had other dogs, Marilyn just had to have another poodle. We wondered if Beaudreaux would act out during the home visit but he walked in the door, flew to Marilyn's lap and stayed there. Marilyn reports that Beau is doing beautifully. She has conquered his allergy problems and he loves his new home. For proof, here is a picture of Marilyn and Beaudreaux. Now that is one happy little camper! Thanks, Marilyn and Robert, for having room in your hearts and home for Beaudreaux.
